when i go to start a new snip it just hangs on the main window. the screen goes white (unresponsive) until i kill the window.

I don't use the default snippet path that VS uses, I have mine on a different drive altogether. Each time I go to save a snippet, the Save dialog opens to the VS default directory, meaning that I have to manually chanbge it every time.

It would be good to have an option added to be able to set a different directory (or continue to use the VS default). I can't believe this hasn't been requested before. I searched for an existing request, but couldn't find one.
Comments: That is a very good suggestion. I will fix this in a future release.

There are a number of spelling/grammatical mistakes in the Options page.

Editor:
* "DefaultLanguage" --> "Default Language" (occurs in option setting & description)
* "VisualBasic" --> "Visual Basic"

Index:
* "Where wold you like" --> "Where would you like"

Search:
* "where you want snippets to be index" --> "where you want snippets to be indexed"
* "all sub-durectories" --> "all sub-directories"
* "from each of these directories" --> "in each of these directories"
Comments: Oops. That is embarrassing. My excuse is that I was much younger when I wrote those ;) Will fix them in a future release.

Matt, that's not your problem, that's Visual Studio's problem. There are some of us who still hold out hope that it will be possible to one day choose to have decent icons back again. :-)

Though a more stylised icon (but not flat) wouldn't be a bad thing.

When you open the snippet in the snippet editor you can just change the title in the top bar.

Is there a means of changing the snippet title without going in to the snippet file and changing the xml and then rebuilding ?

I don't know if it was always SQL_SSDT but that is what VS 2012 is currently looking for. It ignores snippets where the language="SQL".

OK, so the change is snippet designer just need to change the default language of sql snippets to sql_ssdt ? Was this language always sql_ssdt or did that change ?

Are you sure you set the shortcut field for the snippet in the porperties window?
Did you try restarting vs? You shouldn't need to but its good to check.

I installed Snippet Installer using the vsix file. I created a new snippet as per the tutorial and saved the snippet file in:

{user dir}\Visual Studio 2012\Code Snippets\Visual C#\My Code Snippets

When I type the shortcut in the editor, in this case "header", I do not see it in the auto-complete list. What do I need to do to make it work?

I'm using Visual Studio 2012 Update 2 version 4.5.50709.

By default, the snippet folder it is watching for My Code Snippets is at:
C:\Users\<USERNAME>\Documents\Visual Studio 11\Code Snippets\SQL_SSDT\My Code Snippets
(It is using SQL_SSDT rather than SQL as part of the folder name)

Also, if you view the XML of the snippet created by Snippet Designer, it is showing Code Language="sql" rather than Code Language="SQL_SSDT". If you manually change a saved snippet to "SQL_SSDT" (and make sure the snippet is in a folder watched by VS) it shows up in the list of SQL snippets.

If you can make these 2 changes then SQL snippets should work in VS 2012. Thanks!

Here are the templates. You should unzip into your Item Templates folder (usually %UserProfile%\My Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Templates\Item Templates). It will create files in two subfolders: Visual Web Developer\VisualBasic and Visual Web Developer\CSharp.

Test carefully. Snippet Designer seems to have a problem sometimes with using an auto-recovery version of the snippet file instead of the correct one, resulting in a loss of changes.

I have figured out how to create a Code Snippet template that (sort of) works with Web Site projects. It has some limitations, but works at least well enough to create snippets using the File->New File menu item that will open in Snippet Designer.

Limitations:

It does not work with the "Export as Snippet" context menu. You will get an empty snippet. You have to cut-and-paste the code into the snippet. However, this does give you a quick way to create a new snippet, bypassing the File->New File dialog.
Due to limitations of Visual Studio, it cannot create new snippets in the normal location (usually "%UserProfile%\My Documents\Visual Studio 20xx\Code Snippets"). It creates a "My Snippets" folder in the root of your web project, and stores them there. You can either add that folder to Snippets Manager using "Tools/Code Snippets Manager/Add..." or copy them to the Visual Studio location. For web site projects they need to go in the "Visual Web Developer\My HTML Snippets" or "Visual Web Developer\My JScript Snippets" subfolders.
